Duta Graha Indah, a Japanese and an Indonesian company respectively to construct a pre-service teachers training facility and rehabilitate the existing facility at the University of Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. This is part of the US Government $400 Million Tsunami Grant Assistance Program for the Aceh Province
The university campus was severely impacted by the devastating tsunami and earthquake of December 2004. More than 100 teachers and 1200 students lost their life during the tsunami.
Unsyiah is one of the three large public higher education institution in Aceh. The FKIP (pre-service teacher faculty) at Unsyiah is the main pre-service teachers training facility trying to meet shortfall of qualified teachers in Aceh. Current student enrolment on regular and non regular program is 6,615. The construction of the new FKIP Teacher’s Training Facility supported by USAID within the University of Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah) campus will help enhance the institutions capacity for qualified teachers by 318 staff (25% of total Unsyiah staff). The new facility to be built is a 3-storied facility with approximately 9500 square-meters of space. This construction effort also includes rehabilitation of the existing facility and upgrading it to a more compatible condition of the new facility. The new facility is expected to hold a library, auditorium, laboratories, and class rooms and number of yearly graduates are expected to increase to 600 students once the FKIP facility is fully implemented.
The design work for the new facility was done by a consortium of PEM GmbH from Germany, PT. Bita Enarcon Engineering, Indonesia, HANTEK from Turkey. Other essentials items for full operation of the new facility will be provided through the USAID Decentralized Basic Education Program.
